policy and margaret spellings who later became secretary of education was in charge of domestic policy. i used to say that meant in the bush white house, women were in charge of everything abroad and everything at home and that sounded just about right to me. i do think that women bring a different perspective to our nation's public policy debate. i remember being in a meeting where we were discussing the impact of some proposed energy saving regulations on everyday household appliances and we were at this big reference room in the roosevelt room where we had big meetings and looked around and realized i was the only woman in the room and i looked at assembled scientists and energy experts and remember thinking, you know, i bet i'm the only person in this room who regularly uses a washing machine. we're talking about front loading versus side loading and i read in the consumer reports the new regulations screwed up washing machines, i tried, i'm sorry. but i do think women bring that practical perspective to the policy debate. they asked me to talk about how i got here and got involved
